Matthew Maddox, Jr.

From the Record

Moved with the family from Culpeper County to Harrison County, Virginia (WV) and settled in the Clarksburg/Bridgeport areas. The earlier history identifies him as a Baptist minister at the Old Baptist Meeting House Church, and a cemetery plaque lists a pastor Matthew Maddox. The later charts caution that the claim was not proved and that another contemporary Matthew Maddox—a son of William Maddox and Sarah Gaston—was a documented Baptist minister; the identity therefore remains uncertain.

No land ownership records or recorded will were found; the 1860 census of Harrison County lists him and his second wife receiving mail from the Clarksburg Post Office. Burial records were found for both wives in the old Baptist Meeting House section of Bridgeport Cemetery, but none for Matthew himself; the compiler concluded his burial was probably a very plain affair. In 1848 he wrote a letter recounting the Maddox family history, now in the Virginia State Library Archives Collection.

The letter was transcribed by genealogist Patricia Cornwell, printed in 'Maddox Family Records' by Roberta Vesta Laundrum Wiley in 1974, and later published in the Jackson Herald under the name Tommy Sewell. The compiler judges most of its events and dates correct but notes errors, including an otherwise unattested 'Appleby Maddox'. His first-marriage date is given inconsistently in the source (see source_conflicts).

From the Family Manuscript

• On 11 October 2000 a Maddox, family meeting was held in Vienna, West Virginia. Our relatives came from all over the United States to attend this meeting. All of the families were involved in genealogy and research into the Maddox family. Information was exchanged on our lineage and one branch in our lineage was found. This lineage was from Matthew Maddox, Jr. through his son, Mathew R. Maddox. The descendants of this lineage ended up in Florida and a copy of this lineage was attached to the Maddox Family History master file.

• We don’t know just how long Matthew and family remained in Culpeper County, Virginia, but his sons, Rozzel Maddox, born 1781 and Matthew Maddox, Jr., born 1783 were born in Culpeper County, Virginia.

• Matthew and family moved to Harrison County, Virginia (WV) sometime around 1785. William Maddox, son of Matthew Maddox, Sr. was born in 1785 in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Two sons, Matthew Maddox, Jr. and William Maddox stayed in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) the rest of their lives; they lived, died and are buried in Harrison County, Virginia (WV).

• No records have been located on child 8 and 9 in Harrison County, West Virginia. A national search was conducted on these children with negative results. The only record located, was the marriage record on Mary Ann Maddox and Samuel Hoff.

• Matthew Maddox, Jr 5. was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, the son of Matthew Maddox, Sr 4. and Rachel (Bonniefield) Maddox. When the family moved from Culpeper County Virginia to Harrison County, Virginia (WV) Matthew Maddox, Jr. moved with them.

Where the Sources Disagree

• first marriage date (to Mary Ann Romine) — 31 August 1807 (Chapter 5 child listing (line 476)) · 31 August 1801 (Chapter 6 header, his own chapter (line 637)) — the chronicle uses 31 August 1801.

• identity as a Baptist minister — became a Baptist minister and preached at the Old Baptist Meeting House (Maddox Family History, generation 5 narrative) · other writings called him a Baptist preacher, but the compiler found no evidence; another contemporary Matthew Maddox was a documented Baptist minister (Maddox Family History Charts, generation 5 narrative (chart transcript lines 2302-2312)) — the chronicle uses possible, but not established.

  The cemetery plaque names a pastor Matthew Maddox but does not distinguish the two contemporary men.
