Introduction
In 1665 a young Welshman named Samuel Maddox — son of the house of Madoc of Scethrog — crossed the Atlantic and landed in St. Marys County, Maryland, where he settled the three hundred acres he called Green Springs Farm. From that landing this chronicle follows his people through thirteen generations: four on the Maryland tidewater, a generation in the Virginia Piedmont, and then over the mountains to the western waters — Harrison, Jackson, and Wood County, West Virginia — where more of this family lies buried than in any other ground on earth. The record was gathered across a lifetime by Rodney C. Maddox, and this volume keeps it as he set it down: 673 people, their marriages and migrations, the stories he preserved, and an honest ledger of the places where his sources disagree.

Heads of the Line
Samuel (Madoc) Maddox
First of this lineage to travel from Wales to America, landing in St. Marys County, Maryland in 1665; his friend Thomas Notley (later Maryland's eighth Governor) came on the same ship.

- Anna Maria Elizabeth (Cheuvront) Maddox's gravestone is engraved 7 November 1886, but the source documents her death as 7 November 1866 and states the stone is not correct.
- Katherine “Katie” Maddox (generation 9) is listed as born 1866, which precedes her parents' 1885 marriage and her brother George William's 1888 birth; likely a source typographical error (perhaps for 1886). Retained verbatim.
