From the Record

Moved with the family to Jackson County, Virginia (WV) in 1838. Married by Rev. Samuel Sheppard; on the official Writ County court record his last name is spelled 'Matox', and the license states he was born in Harrison County, residing in Jackson County, his parents William and Elizabeth 'Matox' (Maddox). The marriage year is given inconsistently in the source (see source_conflicts). Listed in the 1880 census of the Ravenswood District, Jackson County, West Virginia as a farmer and blacksmith, with daughter Nancy Winebrenner, granddaughter Cora Winebrenner (age 4) and Matilda Cheuvront living in his household.

The same census names Rachel M., Mary A. and Susan A. Maddox, children not explained elsewhere in the family record, while Margaret Maddox is absent; the charts leave their identities open for investigation. With his wife and his sister Sarah (Maddox) Ott he bought out Mary Louisa (Maddox) Currey's share of their mother's estate under the 1868 Heirs Estate Deed (Deed Book 95, Page 29, Jackson County Courthouse; recorded by David Sommerville, Justice of the Peace). The charts place this Sand Creek property in the area of Gilmore School.
