Aaron Cheuvront

Received a 2,000-acre land grant in Jackson County, Virginia (WV) in 1838 from Governor Allison of Virginia, believed given for his father Joseph Cheuvront's American Revolutionary War service. Built his cabin at the location of Lockhart, where the Balderson Store was later built. Married three times: his first wife Miltada Grant died in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) and is buried at Good Hope; his second wife Sarah Rose (Richards) Cheuvront and third wife Miltada (Bolin) Cheuvront are buried with him in the Maddox Cemetery. After William Oscar Maddox's death he took in and helped raise the Maddox children.

• In 1838, Aaron Cheuvront, father of Williams wife received a 2,000-acre land grant from Governor Allison of Virginia, this land was in Jackson County, Virginia (WV) in the Lockhart, Odaville and Sandyville areas. We believe that this land grant was given to Aaron Cheuvront for his fathers service in the American Revolutionary War; his father was Joseph Cheuvront. At the time, the Cheuvront family and William Oscar Maddox lived in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) in the Good Hope area. William Oscar Maddox and Cheuvront family sold out in Harrison County, Virginia (WV).

• William came down with the Typhoid Fever and he died on the 21st day of August 1841. He was buried on a high bank up from Sand Creek, this cemetery would later be known as the Maddox Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia. Typhoid Fever was a real and deadly problem for the early settlers in this area, numerous people died from it. After his death, Aaron Cheuvront took the family in and helped to raise the children of William Oscar Maddox. When he died, he left his wife and eight children behind. In the 1850 census of Jackson County, Virginia (WV), it lists Anna Maria Elizabeth (Cheuvront) Maddox and the eight children as living in the same household with Aaron Cheuvront.

• Aaron Cheuvront, his second wife, Sarah Rose (Richards) Cheuvront and his third wife, Miltada (Bolin) Cheuvront are all buried in the same Maddox Cemetery. Miltada Grant, the first wife of Aaron Cheuvront, died in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) and she is buried at Good Hope, in the same county.

• In the 1880 census of the Ravenswood District, Jackson County, West Virginia, George C. Maddox 7, his wife and children were listed. All of the children were listed as being born in Jackson County, West Virginia. Also listed were Nancy Winebrenner (Nancy Georgianna “Ann” Maddox), her daughter Cora Winebrenner, age 4 and Matilda Cheuvront (Mitilda Bolin Cheuvront-3rd wife of Aaron Cheuvront), all living in the household of George C. Maddox. The census listed George C. Maddox as a farmer and blacksmith.

• In Deed Book 95, Page 29, Jackson County Courthouse, Jackson County, West Virginia the Heirs Estate Deed of Anna Maria Elizabeth (Cheuvront) Maddox, wife of William Oscar Maddox 6 is found. The heirs to this deed were, Mary Louisa 7 (Maddox) Currey, husband, James Harvey Currey, Sarah 7 (Maddox) Ott, husband, Lewis Ott and George C. Maddox 7, wife, Mahala (Lockhart) Maddox. In this deed, George C. and Mahala (Lockhart) Maddox and Sarah (Maddox) Ott and husband, Lewis Ott bought out the 3rd share of the property under this deed titled to Mary Louisa (Maddox) Currey and her husband, James Harvey Currey. The purchase price was a total of $1,000.00. The closing date on the deed was 1 February 1868. The deed didn’t give the total acres involved, but referred to the deed by Aaron Cheuvront to Anna Maria Elizabeth (Cheuvront) Maddox. From the language used in the deed, it was impossible to determine the exact location of the property, but it was along Sand Creek. The deed was recorded by David Sommerville, Justice of the Peace for Jackson County, West Virginia. A copy of this deed is attached to the master file of the Maddox Family History.
