Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront

Third and last wife of Aaron Cheuvront (her given name is also rendered 'Miltada' and 'Mitilda' in the source). Listed in the 1880 census living in the household of George C. Maddox. By a deed dated 23 December 1881 (recorded Deed Book 28, pages 491-492, Jackson County, by Clerk of Courts L. H. Lemley on 13 March 1886), she signed over the last 48 acres, more or less, of the Cheuvront property on Sand Creek to John Amos Maddox in return for his caring for her in her old age and handling her burial; the deed was drawn up by James H. Currey and John Amos Maddox appears to have kept up his end of the deal.

• In the 1880 census of the Ravenswood District, Jackson County, West Virginia, George C. Maddox 7, his wife and children were listed. All of the children were listed as being born in Jackson County, West Virginia. Also listed were Nancy Winebrenner (Nancy Georgianna “Ann” Maddox), her daughter Cora Winebrenner, age 4 and Matilda Cheuvront (Mitilda Bolin Cheuvront-3rd wife of Aaron Cheuvront), all living in the household of George C. Maddox. The census listed George C. Maddox as a farmer and blacksmith.

• In a deed made on the 23rd day of December, 1881, between Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront, the last wife of Aaron Cheuvront and John Amos Maddox 8, it was set fourth that John Amos Maddox 8 would take care of Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront in her old age and take care of her burial. In return, Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront would sign over the last part of the Cheuvront property, 48 acres, more or less, to John Amos Maddox. This land was on Sand Creek, the exact location unknown, but we believe it was located on the lands that John Amos Maddox lived on.. This deed was drawn up by James H. Currey and it was recorded in deed book 28 on pages 491 and 492, Jackson County, West Virginia. The deed was recorded by L. H. Lemley, Clerk of Courts, Jackson County, West Virginia on 13 March 1886. Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront died on 6 March 1887 in Jackson County, West Virginia and she is buried in the Maddox Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia in a marked grave. It appears that John Amos Maddox kept up his end of the deal and he did receive ownership of the property.

• In this census there are some children listed that we know nothing about, they are Rachel M. Maddox, Mary A. Maddox and Susan Maddox and one child not listed was Margaret Maddox, born 1864, Jackson County, West Virginia. Found no records on these children and in the writings by Elizabeth Williams (descendant of William Oscar Maddox, Sr.) found no information to explain the census records. It is possible that these children died young or moved from the area. The Cheuvront Family History and the Lockhart Family History were checked and they have the same information as listed here. This area is still open to investigation. The Nancy Winebrenner listed was the daughter of George C. Maddox, she was Nancy Georgianne “Anne” (Maddox) Winebrenner. Her first husband, James Winebrenner died c 1885 and she did not marry again until 20 July 1890. The Cora Winebrenner listed was the daughter of Nancy Winebrenner. Matilda Cheuvront was the 3rd. wife of Aaron Cheuvront and the grandmother of George C. Maddox.

• Located in Deed Book 28, pages 491 and 492 dated 23 December 1881 was a deed between John Amos Maddox and Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront, the 3rd. wife of Aaron Cheuvront. Certain terms were spelled out in the deed and if John Amos Maddox lived up to the terms of this deed he would be granted all that was left of the Cheuvront property, about 37 acres located in the Ravenswood District, Jackson County, West Virginia.
