John Amos Maddox 8 was born the 14th day of September 1863 in Jackson County, West Virginia to George C7. and Mahala (Lockhart) Maddox. John was listed in the 1880 census of Jackson County; he was listed as being 17 years of age and was a farm laborer.
On the 23rd of December 1885 he married Hannah Jane “Sis” Conger in Jackson County, West Virginia. Hannah was the daughter of Elias Darby Conger, born, 2 April 1837 in Wayne Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Her mother was Margaret Jane (Baker) Conger, born, 1837 in Virginia. Hannah was born in Monroe County, Ohio on 5 May 1865. The Conger family moved to Jackson County, West Virginia (this was a common route for many families who came to Jackson County) and her father died 5 March 1913 at Sandyville and her mother died in 1913 at Sandyville, both are buried in the Drift Run Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia. The Conger family came from Middlesex, New Jersey and has been traced back to the year 1744.
Hannah gave birth to nine children, she lost a child (John L. Maddox) in 1900 and (Ada B. Maddox) in 1903. Both of these children died as infants. Hannah gave birth to Marie Maddox on the 14th of April 1905 and Hannah died less than a month later. At that point, Bertha A. Smith was brought in to nurse and take care of Marie. Bertha had just given birth to a child and she took care of her child and Marie. Hannah was buried in the Drift Run Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia.
On the 18th of June 1907/1908, John Amos Maddox 8 and Bertha A. Smith were married in Jackson County, West Virginia. The children that followed were Holly A. Maddox and Cella Vesta Maddox.
In a deed made on the 23rd day of December, 1881, between Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront, the last wife of Aaron Cheuvront and John Amos Maddox 8, it was set fourth that John Amos Maddox 8 would take care of Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront in her old age and take care of her burial. In return, Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront would sign over the last part of the Cheuvront property, 48 acres, more or less, to John Amos Maddox. This land was on Sand Creek, the exact location unknown, but we believe it was located on the lands that John Amos Maddox lived on.. This deed was drawn up by James H. Currey and it was recorded in deed book 28 on pages 491 and 492, Jackson County, West Virginia. The deed was recorded by L. H. Lemley, Clerk of Courts, Jackson County, West Virginia on 13 March 1886. Matilda (Bolin) Cheuvront died on 6 March 1887 in Jackson County, West Virginia and she is buried in the Maddox Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia in a marked grave. It appears that John Amos Maddox kept up his end of the deal and he did receive ownership of the property.
John Amos Maddox worked in the timber industry in Jackson, County, was a farmer and lived from the land, as most did during this time.
John Amos Maddox 8 died on 31 December 1945 and on his death certificate, the cause of death was recorded as “chronic nephritis” which is a gene pool disease known as brights disease, a disease of the kidneys. If this disease is not treated properly, it can be fatal. To date, none of his descendants known to us has contracted this disease. John Amos Maddox was buried in the Drift Run Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia.
Bertha Smith was born in Jackson County, West Virginia on 5 August 1887, a daughter of Bernard and Mary (Markle) Smith, they lived on Drift Run. After the death of her husband, John Amos Maddox 8, she lived in the old house along with Holly A. Maddox9, his wife Lucille (Angus) Maddox and Harry Odell Maddox9. Some time later, a new house was built between the old house and U. S. Route 21, on the same tract of land and the above moved into the new house. On 25 February 1973, Bertha A. (Smith) Maddox died in the newer house. Her funeral was held at the Drift Run Methodist Church, by Rev. Gene Eaton and she was laid to rest in the Drift Run Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia, buried next to her husband, John Amos Maddox and his first wife, Hannah Jane “Sis” (Conger) Maddox.
