Gave birth to nine children. She gave birth to Marie Maddox on 14 April 1905 and died less than a month later; Bertha A. Smith, who had just given birth to a child of her own, was brought in to nurse and take care of Marie. Her death year is given inconsistently in the source (see source_conflicts). The Conger family came from Middlesex, New Jersey and has been traced back to the year 1744.

On the 23rd of December 1885 he married Hannah Jane “Sis” Conger in Jackson County, West Virginia. Hannah was the daughter of Elias Darby Conger, born, 2 April 1837 in Wayne Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Her mother was Margaret Jane (Baker) Conger, born, 1837 in Virginia. Hannah was born in Monroe County, Ohio on 5 May 1865. The Conger family moved to Jackson County, West Virginia (this was a common route for many families who came to Jackson County) and her father died 5 March 1913 at Sandyville and her mother died in 1913 at Sandyville, both are buried in the Drift Run Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia. The Conger family came from Middlesex, New Jersey and has been traced back to the year 1744.

Bertha Smith was born in Jackson County, West Virginia on 5 August 1887, a daughter of Bernard and Mary (Markle) Smith, they lived on Drift Run. After the death of her husband, John Amos Maddox 8, she lived in the old house along with Holly A. Maddox9, his wife Lucille (Angus) Maddox and Harry Odell Maddox9. Some time later, a new house was built between the old house and U. S. Route 21, on the same tract of land and the above moved into the new house. On 25 February 1973, Bertha A. (Smith) Maddox died in the newer house. Her funeral was held at the Drift Run Methodist Church, by Rev. Gene Eaton and she was laid to rest in the Drift Run Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia, buried next to her husband, John Amos Maddox and his first wife, Hannah Jane “Sis” (Conger) Maddox.

George William Maddox 9 was born on the 13th day of October 1888 in Jackson County, West Virginia to John Amos and Hannah Jane “Sis” (Conger) Maddox. George married Laura Estella Robbins of Parsons Run, Jackson County, West Virginia on the 30th day of July 1920 in Jackson County, West Virginia.
