Matthew Maddox, Sr 4. was born in St. Marys County, Maryland to John 3 and Mary (Dyson) Maddox. In Frederick County, Maryland in 1773, he married Rachel Bonnifield. The only child to be born in St. Marys County, Maryland was their first child, Mary Molly Maddox 5 (1776/1777).
Matthew and Rachel moved from St. Marys County, Maryland, to the old Dunmore County, Virginia (now Shenandoah County, Virginia) and in 1779 they bought 401 acres of land from Jeremy Odell on a place called Jeremy’s Run, this later was called Matthews Arm. Matthews Arm is now a location named as such in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.
In October of 1780, Matthew enlisted in Shenandoah County, Virginia into the Colonial Army. At this time, the American Revolutionary War was in full swing. Matthew’s Virginia service number was 17802 and his Colonial Army service number was 38181. Matthew was assigned to the command of the Virginia 3rd Line Company under the command of Captain Oldham; his enlistment was for a period of 24 months. The Virginia 3rd Line Company was under the command of General Muhlenberg and General Green. The Virginia 3rd Line Company marched to North Carolina where they engaged the British Forces under the command of Lord Cornwallis at Guilford Courthouse. The battle last a full day, the British forces lost 98 killed and 428 wounded. The Colonial Army lost 76 dead and around 500 wounded in the battle. General Green pulled out of Guilford Courthouse and led the British forces all over North Carolina and then into South Carolina. On the 25th day of April 1781, the two forces met at Camden, South Carolina, and this battle was the Second Battle of Camden, Hobkirks Hill. It was in this battle that Matthew was shot in the leg with a one-ounce lead ball. Matthew was dragged off the battlefield into the woods and left to die, this act carried out by a fellow by the name of Bisen.
Matthew was found by those who came to bury the dead, but it was five days after the battle. Matthew had no food or water, except for the dew he licked from the grass. Matthew was taken to a field hospital where the small bone in his leg was removed from joint to joint. Matthew was judged unfit for service, was given a full discharge and taken home.
Matthew didn’t go back to his land in Shenandoah County, Virginia, but went to his parents home located in Culpeper County, Virginia. Because of his wounds, Matthew would never be the same; it would appear that he would not be able to do much. As to the location of his wife, Rachael and child Mary Molly during the period that Matthew was away in the army, it is unknown where they stayed.
We know that Matthew was in Culpeper County, Virginia as he did inherit the property of his parents, John and Mary (Dyson) Maddox in 1787. Matthew appeared in a court in Culpeper County, Virginia on the 16th day of April 1787 to prove (probate) the will of his mother, Mary (Dyson) Maddox. This will was probated and the property was turned over to him. The tax records of Culpeper County, Virginia in the 1787 Tax Year lists Matthew as paying the taxes on the property he inherited, and he did pay taxes on one slave over the age of 16 years.
We don’t know just how long Matthew and family remained in Culpeper County, Virginia, but his sons, Rozzel Maddox, born 1781 and Matthew Maddox, Jr., born 1783 were born in Culpeper County, Virginia.
Matthew and family moved to Harrison County, Virginia (WV) sometime around 1785. William Maddox, son of Matthew Maddox, Sr. was born in 1785 in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Two sons, Matthew Maddox, Jr. and William Maddox stayed in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) the rest of their lives; they lived, died and are buried in Harrison County, Virginia (WV).
In about 1812, Matthew and some of his family moved to Wood County, Virginia (WV). Matthew and Rachel moved, as did their children, Rozzel, Thomas, Arnold, Alpheous and the two adopted children, Elizabeth Maddox and Jane Teressa Neale.
The land ownership records of Wood County, Virginia (WV) revealed that Rozzel and Thomas Maddox were the landowners. Matthew and Rachel Maddox owned no land in Wood County, Virginia (WV). It appears that Matthew and Rachel lived with their son, Thomas Maddox. Matthew Maddox, Sr. didn’t have a will recorded in Wood County, Virginia (WV). In fact, there were very few records on Matthew and Rachel Maddox recorded in Wood County, Virginia (WV).
On the 20th day of July 1820, Matthew Maddox, Sr. appeared in a court in Wood County, Virginia (WV) and made his application for his Revolutionary War pension. In this application, he listed the details of his service during and after the war. Matthew stated that after being wounded, he was taken to the hospital at Charlotte Town, South Carolina, then to Salesburg, was discharged by General Mulenburg, that the discharge was given to Col. Jennings of Shenandoah County, Virginia and that he was released forever. Matthew also listed the health of his wife, Rachel as being very infirm and that the only property that he owned was, 3 beds, 2 cows, 2 calves, 2 hogs, some kitchen furniture pots, pans, dishes and cash in the amount $1.19. Matthew stated that he had no income, owned no property and by occupation he was a farmer but unable to follow the same. Matthew was granted the pension, which was dated September 1820, this being handled by James H. Neale, agent, Parkersburg, Wood County, Virginia (WV). The pension was for $96.00 per year for the rest of his life. Based on $96.00 per year in the year of 1830, with inflation, the dollar amount would equal $1,456.58 in the year 1999. Matthew did draw this pension until his death on the 1 January 1831.
On the 11th of November 1999, a new Veterans Grave Marker was dedicated to his honor at the Maddox Cemetery, Wood County, West Virginia. The dedication was complete with DAR and SAR rites, with the Colonial Army Color Guard in full uniform, with a three-gun salute. The marker states, MATTHEW MADDOX, Pvt 3 VA Line Rect Revolutionary War 1752 - 1831. His old gravestone had fallen down, was broken up and not readable. Thomas Maddox 5 (20 June 1788-12 August 1872), a son of Matthew, Sr 4. and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox was born in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Thomas moved to Wood County, Virginia (WV) in 1812. Thomas 5, along with his two wives, had 22 children. Thomas, both wives and six of his children are buried in the Maddox Cemetery, Wood County, West Virginia. His children were, Amy Maddox 6 (1814-1880),married Robert Luther Fleming, Lucy Maddox 6 born, 1815, married William Davis, Martin G. Maddox 6 (1817-1847), married Julia Ann Romine, William P. Martin G. Maddox 6, (1817-1847), son of Thomas 5 and Victoria (Petty) Maddox was married to Julia Ann Romine, child of Roswel and Elizabeth Fulton Romine on 3 September 1843 in Wood County, Virginia (WV). They had three children, one being America Maddox 7 (27 May 1843-1885) who married John L. Stout (1847-1926). The Bethel Baptist Church located in the Lubeck District of Wood County, West Virginia, was dedicated to America (Maddox) Stout. This church was organized 9 May 1847. There are two corner stones on this church, one states, “Bethel Baptist Church, AD 1967, Organized 1847” and “In Memory of America Maddox Stout, Mother of O. J. Stout”. America (Maddox) Stout, her husband and children are buried in the cemetery at the Bethel Baptist Church. Several of their descendants (Stout) still live in Wood County, West Virginia. The other children of Martin G. and Julia Ann (Romine) Maddox were Thomas Maddox 7 (11 April 1845-1March 1868) and Mary Ann Maddox 7 (1 June 1848-28 December 1848), both are buried in the Maddox Cemetery, Wood County, West Virginia.
Mary Molly Maddox 5 (1776/1777-1 July 1858) was the first-born child of Matthew, Sr 4. and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox. Mary married Peter Romine in 1796 in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Mary and Peter moved to Wood County, Virginia (WV) and remained in the county until their deaths. Their children were Joseph Romine, born, 1802, Roswel Romine, John Romine born, 1809, Samuel Romine (1806-1888), James Romine (1813-1892), Mary Ann Romine (1821-1894), Matthias Romine, Matika Romine, born, 1810 and Thomas Romine (1815-1902). Mary (Maddox) Romine and Peter Romine are buried in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Lubeck District, Wood County, West Virginia. Several of their descendants (Romine) still live in Wood County, West Virginia.
Jane Teresa Neale 6 (15 June 1799-12 October 1887) was the daughter of Dorcus 5 (Maddox) Neale who married Charles E. Neale (1772-1809). Dorcus (Maddox) Neale was the daughter of Matthew, Sr 4. and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox. After the death of Charles E. Neale, Dorcus could not take care of her daughter. She was adopted by Matthew Maddox, S r4. She was the adopted granddaughter of Matthew, Sr 4. and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox. On 4 September 1823 in Wood County, Virginia (WV) Jane Teresa Neale married Edward Tracewell (9 December 1799-14 March 1875). Edward was an officer of the court, and Sheriff of Wood County, Virginia (WV). Edward also owned banks in Wood County, Virginia (WV). In 1840, Jane and Edward built their house just south of Parkersburg, Wood County, Virginia (WV). This home was called the Tracewell Manor, we know it as the Bickel Estates, which still stands today and in very good shape. Jane and Edward raised thirteen children in the house. Jane and Edward were buried in the Tracewell Cemetery, which is located just over the hill in the back of their home and this cemetery is connected to the Sunset Memorial Gardens, Wood County, West Virginia. Their grave marker is large (for the time period) and it is located in the south- west corner of the cemetery. There was some dispute on the spelling of the name Neale, based on court records it was determined that the correct spelling was in fact Neale. There was another family in Wood County, Virginia (WV) who spelled their last name as Neal; Neal’s Island in the Ohio River at Parkersburg was named after this family
Jane Teressa Neale 6 adpoted granddaughter of Matthew Maddox, Sr. 4 and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox married Edward Tracewell on 4 September 1823 in Wood County, Virginia (now West Virginia). She was the daughter of Dorcus Maddox 5, daughter of Matthew Maddox, Sr. 4 and Charles E. Neale. Jane Teressa Neale, 6 and Edward Tracewell had the following children, Parmelia Tracewell 7 (25 October 1824-6 August 1907), Alcinda Tracewell 7 (13 February 1826-7 February 1873) Married 1843 to Walker Mayhew, William Tracewell 7 (18 February 1827-April 1898) married 1850 to Louisa V. Brown, Mary Louisa Tracewell 7 (18 September 1828-29 January 1906) married 1852 to Jacob Woodford, Violetta Tracewell 7 (24 March 1830-15 February 1859) married 1854 to George Strong, Benjamin Tracewell 7 (29 December 1831-6 March 1908) married 1854 to Angeline J. Bloomer, Jefferson P. Tracewell (2 December 1834-21 July 1892) married 1858 to Mary Saffel and 1873 to Amanda Reynolds, Charles Edward Tracewell 7 James Tracewell 7 (17 September 1838-10 March 1910) married 1859 to Mary Warne, Josephine Tracewell 7 (7 May 1840-11 March 1864), Robert Clinton Tracewell 7 (9 December 1842-November 1887) married 1865 to Mary Jane Leary, Teresa Neal Tracewell 7 born 12 September 1845, married 1867 to Thomas Cothern and John Kenner Tracewell 7 (12 January 1847-11 November 1833) married 1874 to Sarah Stout.
William Maddox 5 (10 April 1785-28 April 1869) was a son of Matthew, Sr 4. and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox and he was born in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). On 26 December 1811, William married Sarah Gaston (1790-1873) in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Their children were, Mansfield Maddox 6, Margaret Maddox6, who married George Washington Ward, Dorcus Maddox 6, who married Henry Lyons, Oliver Maddox 6, Arnold Maddox 6, who married Mary Mildred Smith, Anna Maddox 6, born, 1832, married Hiram T. Sinclair, Ruhema Maddox 6 (1834-1910), married Jefferson B. West, Matthew Maddox 6 (4 October 1812-1863), married Mary Emerson, John Maddox 6 (30 July 1814-23 March 1896), married Eliza Hill, Thomas Maddox 6 (1820-1901), married Martha Ann Goodwin, William D. Maddox 6 (22 January 1822-21 June 1906), married Emily Stalnaker and James Gaston Maddox 6 (17 November 1823-3 January 1901), married Flora Ann Hill. All of the above children were born in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Hiram T. and Anna (Maddox) Sinclair are buried in the Sinclair Cemetery, Harrison County, West Virginia. William 5 and Sarah (Gaston) Maddox are buried in the Sinclair Cemetery, Harrison County, West Virginia.
The son, Matthew Maddox 6, son of William 5 and Sarah Gaston Maddox was known as Rev. M. Maddox 6, who was a Baptist Minister who started churches in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) and married many people. Rev. Matthew Maddox 6 died in the Camp Chase Federal Prison on 5 October 1863, during the American Civil War. Rev. Matthew Maddox 6 was a citizen prisoner from Harrison County, West Virginia and he is buried next to his wife, Mary ( Emerson ) Maddox in the Sinclair Cemetery, Harrison County, West Virginia. The sons, John Maddox 6, Thomas Maddox 6, William D. Maddox 6 and James Gaston Maddox 6 left Harrison County, West Virginia at the close of the American Civil War and went to Jackson County, West Virginia, settled in the Ravenswood, Ripley and Grass Lick areas of the county. As of today, there are descendants of this Maddox line in Jackson, Harrison and Wood Counties.
The son, Thomas Maddox 6, son of William 5 and Sarah Gaston Maddox married Martha Ann Goodwin. Thomas Maddox 6 was born in 1820 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and died in Jackson County, West Virginia in 1901.. His wife died in Jackson County, West Virginia on 8 October 1916. Thomas 6 and his wife are buried in the Grass Lick Baptist Cemetery in Jackson County, West Virginia. Their children were, Columbia Ann Maddox 7 who married Amos Riffle, Louverina Jane Maddox 7 who married Charles A. Jividend, Sarah Canzida Maddox 7 who married T. W. Simmonds, Flourney M. Maddox 7 who married Lucy Hays first, then Sarah Bell Adams, William Rufus Maddox 7,(2 June 1857-12 March 1901), married Rossetta Casto, Mary Eliza Maddox 7 who married John Franklin Vogesong, Hiram Loring Maddox 7 (born-15 February 1912) who married first Mary Adkinson, then Louisa Morrison, George Gallation Maddox 7 who married Mary Casto, Maddox 7, dies in infancy and Maddox 7, dies in infancy.
William D. Maddox 6, son of William 5 and Sarah (Gaston) Maddox was born on 22 January 1822 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He married Emily Stalnaker. William D. Maddox 6 died in Jackson County, West Virginia on 21 June 1906 and along with his wife are buried in the Grass Lick Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia. William and Emily had the following children, Mary L. Maddox 7 (31 October 1844-9February 1922) who married John Thomas, Sarah V. Maddox 7 (31 October 1847-8 September 1905) who married Martin V. Goodwin, Susan A. Maddox 7 (30 May 1857-26 October 1922) who married James C. Bradley, Horace M. Maddox 7 (born: 26 March 1853), Charles G. Maddox 7 (15 February 1858-1935) who married Belle Hill, Albert Montgomery Maddox 7 (24 January 1862-1889), never married and Infant Maddox 7 who died in 1869 in infancy.
The son, John Maddox 6, son of William 5 and Sarah (Gaston) Maddox was born in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia) on 30 July 1814, married Eliza Hill and John died 23 March 1896 in Jackson County, West Virginia. Both John and his wife are buried in the Grass Lick Baptist Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia. The children of John Maddox 6 and Eliza (Hill) Maddox are Mary Elizabeth Maddox 7 who married Samuel E. Stanlnaker, Achimodus A. Maddox 7 who married Alvaretta Jewell, Margaret L. Maddox 7 who married James Hall, Helen E. Maddox 7 and two infants who died in infancy.
The son, James Gaston Maddox 6, son of William 5 and Sarah (Gaston) Maddox was born 17 November 1823 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia), married Flora Ann Hill (3 November 1828-10 March 1911) and James Gaston Maddox 6 died 3 January 1901 in Jackson County, West Virginia. James and Flora are buried in the Grass Lick Baptist Church Cemetery in Jackson County, West Virginia. The children of James Gaston Maddox 6 and Flora Ann (Hill) Maddox are, William H. Maddox 7 (23 March 1850-14-March 1918), married 26 February 1875 to Martha Columbia Corbin, Alonzo T. Maddox 7 (1854-1928) who married Alice J. Rozzel Maddox 5, son of Matthew Maddox, Sr. 4 and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox was born 1781, married 11 October 1807 to Mary Posey in Wood County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and died in 1869 in Centerville, Iowa. Rozzell Maddox 5 and Mary (Posey) Maddox had the following children, Jesse Maddox 6 (16 September 1808-30 December 1874), married 30 June 1831 to Rebecca Davis, Lucinda Maddox 6 (1810-1896) who married Asa Dudley, Verlinda Maddox 6 born 1813, married 4 July 1834 to Jacob Whetsel, Harriet Maddox 6 born 1815, married 11 March 1833 to Joseph Delay, Eliza Louisa Maddox 6 born 1817, married 19 September 1823 to Andrew Lewis, Rozzel Maddox, Jr. 6 (1818-1905), married 22 February 1840 to Mary Ann Nickell, Hannah Maddox 6 born 1821, married 31 August 1842 to George L. Vance, Arnold Maddox 6 (1823-1880), married 13 June 1844 to Eliza Brown, Catherine Maddox 6 born 1827, married 25 February 1849 to Noah Stover and Susannah Maddox 6 born 1829, married 8 October 1848 to James Ellis.
Elizabeth Maddox 5, adopted daughter of Matthew Maddox, Sr. 4 and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox. It is believed that Elizabeth was born as a Maddox and in Culpeper County, Virginia on 21 July 1798. Elizabeth married Bailey Petty on 22 October 1818 in Wood County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Elizabeth died 2 December 1878 in Iowa and is buried in the Shields Cemetery, Decatur County, Iowa. Bailey Petty died in 1850 in Franklin County, Indiana. The children of Elizabeth Maddox 5 and Bailey Petty are, James Petty 6 (3 February 1820-18 December 1888), married 7 May 1843 in Franklin County, Indiana to Pheba Jane Bruce (2 April 1825-23 December 1901) and both are buried in the Shields Cemetery, Decatur County, Iowa, Tabitha D. Petty 6, James Russell Petty 6, Unknown Petty 6 and Unknown Petty 6, Bailey Merriman Petty 6 (18 March 1832-26 August 1899), married 3 April 1856 to Elizabeth Ann Haines, Emaline Petty 6 (1834-c1865), married 9 April 1854 to Stephen M. Lundy, Jesse Disson Petty 6 (11 March 1836-30 May 1917), married 22 May 1857 to Elmira Jordon, Wilbur W. Alfred Alpheous Maddox 5, son of Matthew Maddox, Sr. 4 and Rachel (Bonnifeild) Maddox was born 1 November 1792 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia), married 17 November 1814 in Harrison County, Virginia to Hannah Cassandra Barnes (1791-19 April 1853). Alfred Alpheous Maddox 5 died 13 August 1848 in Adams County, Ohio. Dorcus Maddox 5 daughter of Matthew Maddox, Sr. 4 and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox was born 17 April 1787 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and she died c1820. On 11 July 1807 she married Charles E. Neale in Harrison County, Virginia. Charles E. Neale died in Harrison County, Virginia c1810. The children of Dorcus Maddox 5 and Charles E. Neale were Jane Teressa Neale 6 (15 June 1799-12 October 1887-taken from grave marker), married 4 September 1823 in Wood County, Virginia (now West Virginia) to Edward Tracewell (9 December 1799-14 March 1875), both buried in the Tracewell Cemetery, Wood County, West Virginia, Charles Neale 6 and James Neale 6 (17 April 1809-20 March 1890 who married Lydia Labham. The second husband of Dorcus 5 Maddox) Neale was William White Sr., their children were William White, Jr. 6 (16 August 1812-11 December 1892), married 6 September 1838 to Frances E. Mitchell, Rachel White 6 (1814-1890) married Abraham Fittro, Amy White 6 , Henry White 6 (1818-1835).
Arnold Maddox 5, son of Matthew Maddox, Sr. 4 and Rachel (Bonnifield) Maddox was born 1 April 1790 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and on 7 April 1824 he married Dorcus Tracewell in Wood County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Her father was Edward Tracewell, Sr. and her mother was Dorcus Bonnifield, daughter of Gregory and Sarah (Henly) Bonnifield.. No information has been found to show where Arnold 5 and his wife died or where they are buried . Records were found where Arnold Maddox 5 did receive a land grant for service in the War of 1812, this granted to him in Wood County, Virginia (now West Virginia) on 12 November 1817. Arnold had served in Carringtons 3rd Rifle Company and the grant was addressed to him at Parkersburg, Virginia (now West Virginia.
