At this time, nothing is known on child 2, 3 and 4. There are no records on file in Harrison County, West Virginia. It is possible that child 2 may have moved to Galva, Illinois with his brother, Mathew R. Maddox 6, there is some evidence to support this.
No records have been located on child 8 and 9 in Harrison County, West Virginia. A national search was conducted on these children with negative results. The only record located, was the marriage record on Mary Ann Maddox and Samuel Hoff.
Matthew Maddox, Jr 5. was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, the son of Matthew Maddox, Sr 4. and Rachel (Bonniefield) Maddox. When the family moved from Culpeper County Virginia to Harrison County, Virginia (WV) Matthew Maddox, Jr. moved with them.
Matthew, Jr. settled in the Clarksburg/Bridgeport areas of Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Matthew, Jr. became a Baptist Minister and preached at the Old Baptist Meeting House Church in Bridgeport, Harrison County, Virginia (WV).
Matthew Jr. and both of his wives are buried in the Old Baptist Meeting House Cemetery, now part of the Bridgeport Cemetery, located in Bridgeport, Harrison County, West Virginia. Within this cemetery is a large rock with a brass plaque, which states, “The first building known as the Baptist Meeting House stood on this site. The church was organized about 1770 by Rev. John Sutton and five constituent members. Rev. John Corbly served as pastor 1780-1781. Later his family was killed by the Indians. Rev. Edwards was sent to Buckhannon to preach. This led to the organization of a church there in 1786. In a meeting of the church in 1787, a woman was tired for witchcraft. In 1807, Rev. Jesse Goss became pastor and served nearly 30 years. The pastors that followed were, J. W. Toopborough, John Denham, Phineas Wells, A. J. Garnett, M. Maddox, J. Wrightmann and B. Holden”.
This rock was not far from the graves of Matthew Maddox, Jr 5., wife, Mary Ann (Romine) Maddox and wife, Mary Ann Duvall (Ross) Maddox.
Mary Ann Duvall (Ross) Maddox had been married before to Alexander Ross, born 1779, married 5 April 1806 in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) and died on 28 June 1824 in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Mary Ann Duvall (Ross) Maddox is buried next to her first husband and Matthew Maddox, Jr. is buried next to his first wife.
We found no records to indicate any land ownership for Matthew Maddox, Jr. in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) and no recorded will was located. In the 1860 Census of Harrison County, Virginia (WV), Matthew, Jr. and his second wife, Mary Ann Maddox were listed and it indicated that they received their mail out of the Clarksburg Post Office. No county or state records reference to the death or burial of Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5 were located. It appears that he died a very poor man and some suggest that he was buried by the county.
In 1848, Matthew Maddox, Jr 5. wrote a letter and in this letter, he gave the account of his family and Maddox family in general. This letter was written on three sections of paper, and it is in the possession of the Virginia State Library, Archives Collection. This letter was transcribed by Patricia Cornwell, Genealogist and it is printed in the “Maddox Family Records” by Roberta Vesta Laundrum Wiley, published in 1974 in Parkville, Missouri. Copies of this letter have been floating around for some time and in the possession of many Maddox family members.
I have studied and researched this letter to some depth. A lot of the information is correct, but there are errors in the letter. The author of this letter did have a lot of correct information on the Maddox family and the Bonnifield family. In the letter, you find Appleby Maddox. To date, no information has ever been found to support this claim, and if there was a Appleby Maddox, Appleby was a nick name (this has been research by family members and many genealogists). Most of the events and dates are correct in the letter, but over the years, it appears some material has been added and some removed or lost. The letter that we have is written by hand in script, I am sure it was a hand written copy and by an unknown person. In the letter, he writes, lived on a branch of the Rappanannock River called “Sandy Hook”. At the present time, there is no Sandy Hook in Culpeper County, Virginia, but research did find that there was once a Sandy Hook, now called Huntley, Virginia. Huntley is located on Virginia State Route 522 and very close to the Rappanannock River.
We also have a second copy of a handwritten letter by Matthew Maddox, Jr.; the author is unknown. This letter gives about the same account as the first letter, but not as long, but the spelling of Rozzel Maddox, brother of Matthew, Jr. is spelled correctly, we have found the spelling of his name as Rosel, Rossel, Rossell and Razal, so who every wrote the letter did know the correct spelling of his name. We have a copy of a handwritten letter by Rozzel Maddox, with his signature, this copy is attached to the Master file of the Maddox Family History. Both of the letters are contained in the master file of the Maddox Family History in the possession of Rodney C. Maddox.
The father of John D. Smith, who married Mary Ann Maddox, daughter of Matthew Jr. and Mary Ann (Romine) Maddox, was Watters Smith. Watters Smith lived on a farm in the Duck Creek area of Harrison County, Virginia (WV). This farm site is now a West Virginia State Park where one can tour the land, building, old log homes and the Smith Cemetery, to see how life was like in those times, the 1700’s and 1800’s. The children of Mary Ann Maddox and John D. Smith were Adoline Smith (1839-1930), Edgar Smith born 1840, Delia Ann Smith born 1843, Porter Smith born 1845, Emeline Smith born 1849 and Alexander A. Smith (1847-1949), who all were born, lived and died in Harrison County, Virginia (WV).
The children and descendants of Rachel Maddox and Samuel Sheets spread across West Virginia and then all over the United States.
Mathew R. Maddox 6, who married Eleanor (as stated on the marriage license) Vaughan in Wood County, Virginia (WV) on 3 November 1842 was in the 1850 census of Wood County, Virginia (WV), listing Mathew R 6., wife, Eleanor, children, Wilbur Maddox 7 and Ann Maddox 7. This Maddox family moved from Wood County, Virginia (WV) to Galva, Illinois shortly after 1850. Mathew, Eleanor and one son, Wilbur M. Maddox lived in and died in Galva, Illinois. Mathew (1818-1898), Eleanor (1820-1879) and Wilbur (1843-1866) are all buried in the Maddox section of the Galva Cemetery, Galva, Illinois along with their descendants. I have met and talked with George Wallace Maddox 9 who is a direct descendant of Mathew R. Maddox 6, George resides in Jacksonville, Florida, he has researched his family from Mathew R. Maddox and I do have a copy of his lineage report, which is attached to the master file, Maddox Family History.
Samuel Maddox 6, son of Matthew, Jr 5. and Mary Ann (Romine) Maddox may have moved to Illinois with his brother, Mathew R. Maddox. We do have a connection of a Samuel Maddox in Galva, Illinois, but this matter is still under investigation.
As for Alexander Maddox 6, son born to Matthew, Jr 5. and Mary Ann Duvall (Ross) Maddox, we have been unable to find any records or information on this individual.
Mathew R. Maddox 6 son of Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5 and Mary Ann (Romine) Maddox was born 1818 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia), married Eleanor Vaughan (1820-26 July 1879) in Wood County, Virginia (now West Virginia) on 3 November 1842. Mathew R. Maddox 6 died 26 December 1898 in Galva, Illinois and he is buried along with his wife in the Galva Cemetery, Maddox Plot, Galva, Illinois. The children of Mathew R. Maddox 6 and Eleanor (Vaughan) Maddox were Wilber Maddox 7 (1843-1866), Ann Maddox 7 , Charles Clinton Maddox 7 (21 July 1853-13 April 1939), married 13 February 1879 to May Brownlee (20 August1855-19 November 1909). I do have a tree traced out to generation 10 on this line (living descendants), this is attached to the Maddox Family History Master File.
Mary Ann Maddox 6, daughter of Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5 and Mary Ann (Romine) Maddox was born 28 March 1820 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia), married John D. Smith (12 November 1810-2 February 1887) in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia) on 28 April 1839. The parents of John D. Smith were Watters and Elizabeth (Davisson) Smith. Mary Ann 6 (Maddox) Smith died 6 March 1861 and along with her husband are buried in the Sinclair Cemetery, Harrison County, West Virginia. The children of Mary Ann Maddox 6 and John D. Smith were Adoline Smith 7 (1839-1930), Edgar Smith 7 (1840-?), Delia Ann Smith 7 1843-?), Porter Smith 7 (1845-?), Emeline Smith (1849-?) and Alexander A. Smith 7 (1847-1949).
Rachel Maddox 6, daughter of Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5 and Mary Ann (Romine) Maddox was born 1826 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia), married Samuel Sheets on 29 January 1843 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia). She died in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1859. The children of Rachel Maddox 6 and Samuel Sheets were Juliet Sheets 7 (1847-1884) and Florence Byrd Sheets 7 (24 January 1847-14 September 1911), married 1867 to Hamilton Young, she died in Parsons, West Virginia.
