Known as Rev. M. Maddox, a Baptist Minister who started churches in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) and married many people. Died in the Camp Chase Federal Prison on 5 October 1863 during the American Civil War, a citizen prisoner from Harrison County, West Virginia. (The child listing gives his death simply as 1863.)

  • The son, Matthew Maddox 6, son of William 5 and Sarah Gaston Maddox was known as Rev. M. Maddox 6, who was a Baptist Minister who started churches in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) and married many people. Rev. Matthew Maddox 6 died in the Camp Chase Federal Prison on 5 October 1863, during the American Civil War. Rev. Matthew Maddox 6 was a citizen prisoner from Harrison County, West Virginia and he is buried next to his wife, Mary ( Emerson ) Maddox in the Sinclair Cemetery, Harrison County, West Virginia. The sons, John Maddox 6, Thomas Maddox 6, William D. Maddox 6 and James Gaston Maddox 6 left Harrison County, West Virginia at the close of the American Civil War and went to Jackson County, West Virginia, settled in the Ravenswood, Ripley and Grass Lick areas of the county. As of today, there are descendants of this Maddox line in Jackson, Harrison and Wood Counties.

  • At the same time period there was another Matthew Maddox in the same area in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). This Matthew was the son of William Maddox 5 and Sarah (Gaston) Maddox and he was a Baptist Preacher and known as Rev. M. Maddox. Rev. Matthew Maddox was born 4 October 1812 in Harrison County, Virginia (WV), was arrested by the Union Army after 20 June, 1863 at Good Hope, Harrison County, Virginia (WV) for failure to sign the Union Oath. Matthew was sent to the Union Prison at Camp Chase, Columbus Ohio where he died on 5 October 1863. His wife was Mary Emerson born 1811 and died 1862 in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Both are buried in the Sinclair Cemetery, Harrison County, West Virginia.
