George C. Maddox was born in Harrison County, Virginia and made the trip from Harrison County, Virginia (WV) to Jackson County, Virginia (WV) in 1838 with his parents and the Cheuvront Family.
George C. Maddox was married in Wirt County, Virginia (WV) on 25 December, 1856 to Mahala Lockhart, married by Rev. Samuel Sheppard. In the marriage record it lists the spelling of George C. Maddox as George C. Matox.
George was a farmer and blacksmith and he resided in the Ravenswood District of Jackson County, Virginia (WV). The exact location of where George lived at is still unknown, old deed records did not contain enough information.
From the estate deed of Anna Maria Elizabeth (Cheuvront) Maddox (his mother) dated 1868 found in Deed Book 95, page 29 on file in Jackson County, West Virginia the following was found. The heirs were James Harvey and Mary Louisa (Maddox) Currey, Lewis and Sarah (Maddox) Ott and George C. and Mahala (Lockhart) Maddox. Lewis Ott and George C. Maddox bought out the 3rd. share belonging to James Harvey Currey for the sum of $1,000.00. The land laid on Sand Creek in what was then Gilmore Township, Jackson County, West Virginia, this would have been in and around the Gilmore School location.

In this census there are some children listed that we know nothing about, they are Rachel M. Maddox, Mary A. Maddox and Susan Maddox and one child not listed was Margaret Maddox, born 1864, Jackson County, West Virginia. Found no records on these children and in the writings by Elizabeth Williams (descendant of William Oscar Maddox, Sr.) found no information to explain the census records. It is possible that these children died young or moved from the area. The Cheuvront Family History and the Lockhart Family History were checked and they have the same information as listed here. This area is still open to investigation. The Nancy Winebrenner listed was the daughter of George C. Maddox, she was Nancy Georgianne “Anne” (Maddox) Winebrenner. Her first husband, James Winebrenner died c 1885 and she did not marry again until 20 July 1890. The Cora Winebrenner listed was the daughter of Nancy Winebrenner. Matilda Cheuvront was the 3rd. wife of Aaron Cheuvront and the grandmother of George C. Maddox.
As for the son of George C. Maddox, George M. Maddox, he has been traced to the 1920 census of Tygart District, Wood County, West Virginia. Listed were George M. Maddox, age 50, Bettie Maddox, wife, age 51 and Jennings Maddox, Son, age 14. No trace of this family has been found since the 1920 census.
George C. Maddox died of Thypoid Fever on 6 January 1882 and is buried in the Maddox Cemetery, Jackson County, West Virginia. His wife, Mahala (Lockhart) Maddox died 10 May 1913 in Wirt County, West Virginia. There is a record on this death in Jackson County, West Virginia, but no burial records. It is believed that she did die in Wirt County, West Virginia but the burial was in Jackson County, West Virginia in the Maddox Cemetery next to her husband, but no grave marker was placed. There is a unmarked grave right next to the grave of George C. Maddox. Unable to locate any burial records from the old index of burials in this cemetery. We believe that the record on her death in Jackson County, West Virginia was in reference to her burial in Jackson County, West Virginia.
