The mother of child number 8 and 9 was Mary Ann Duvall (Ross) Maddox, the second wife of Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5 Child number II Samuel Maddox 6 may have gone to Galva, Illinois with his brother Mathew R. Maddox 6, this is still open to investigation. There is no information on child III James Maddox 6 and child IV John Maddox 6 and only the birth date is known on child IX Alexander Maddox 6.
Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5 settled in Harrison County, Virginia (WV) in and around the Clarksburg/Bridgeport areas. From other writings it indicated that he was a Baptist Preacher, but nothing has been found to support this claim.
In the 1860 census of Harrison County, Virginia (WV) Matthew and his second wife appeared in the census, receiving their mail at Clarksburg. Mary Ann Duvall (Ross) Maddox died 29 April 1866 and in the 1870 census Matthew did not appear.
Located in the Bridgeport Cemetery, Harrison County, West Virginia is the old section which was known as the Old Baptist Meeting House Church Cemetery, this is the burial location of Matthew and both of his wives. In this cemetery is a large rock with a plaque which states the following.
The first building known as the Baptist Meeting House stood on this site. The church was organized about 1770 by Rev. John Sutton and five constituent members. Rev. John Corbly served as pastor 1780-1781. Later his family was killed by the Indians. Rev. Edwards was sent to Buchannon to preach. This lead to the organization of a church there in 1786. In a meeting of the church in 1778 a woman was tired for witchcraft. In 1807 Rev. Jesse Goss became pastor and served nearly 30 years. The pastors that followed were J. W. Toopborough, John Denham, Phineas Wells, A. J. Garnett, Matthew Maddox, J. Wrightmann and B. Holden.
At the same time period there was another Matthew Maddox in the same area in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). This Matthew was the son of William Maddox 5 and Sarah (Gaston) Maddox and he was a Baptist Preacher and known as Rev. M. Maddox. Rev. Matthew Maddox was born 4 October 1812 in Harrison County, Virginia (WV), was arrested by the Union Army after 20 June, 1863 at Good Hope, Harrison County, Virginia (WV) for failure to sign the Union Oath. Matthew was sent to the Union Prison at Camp Chase, Columbus Ohio where he died on 5 October 1863. His wife was Mary Emerson born 1811 and died 1862 in Harrison County, Virginia (WV). Both are buried in the Sinclair Cemetery, Harrison County, West Virginia.
No burial records have been located on Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5 in Harrison County, West Virginia. Records of the Bridgeport Cemetery, Harrison County, West Virginia turned up burial records on Mary Ann (Romine) Maddox and Mary Ann Duvall (Ross) Maddox, the wives of Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5. From the looks of things it appears that the burial of Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5 was a very common affair.
In 1848 Matthew Maddox, Jr. 5 wrote a letter about his family and a copy of this letter is attached to the Maddox Family History. The letter is held by the Virginia State Library. Most of the contents of this letter proved to be correct. This letter was also published in the Jackson Herald (Jackson County, West Virginia) under the pen name of Tommy Sewell. John C. Maddox, Genealogist with the Maddox Family Website sent a copy of the letter from the library to Rodney C. Maddox and this is also attached to the Maddox Family History.
