George William Maddox 9 and his wife, Laura Estella (Robbins) Maddox lived on Drift Run, Lockhart and Ravenswood, Jackson County, West Virginia. In 1943 they moved to the Barlow area of Washington County, Ohio. George bought a 100 acre farm on what is now State Route 550 about one and one half miles west of Barlow, Ohio. They sold the farm and moved to Belpre, Washington County, Ohio. Their son, Carl Owen Maddox 10 bought the farm back and George and Laura moved back to the farm and it was their residence at the time of their deaths.
George served in the Army in World War I, entering the U. S. Army on 27 May 1918. After training he was sent overseas to France. George served under the command of General Pershing, the first American Troops to fight overseas. In the Argonne Forest Area, Southwest of Verdun France at St. Mihiel there was a offensive action in which George was involved in against the German Troops. This battle started on 12 September 1918 and lasted until 16 September 1918. It was in this battle that George was shot in his left arm and left leg on 14 September 1918. When George was found on the field he was taken to the field hospital where his left leg had to be amputated and he used a wooden leg for the rest of his life. George did receive a 75 % disability for life from the U. S. Army. His service number was 316989 and he was discharged from the Army on 12 September 1919 and returned home to Jackson County, West Virginia.
Laura Estella (Robbins) Maddox was born in a log house on Parsons Run, Grant District, Medina area of Jackson County, West Virginia. The house burned down, but some of the log building and barn are still standing. Laura attended the Lockhart Chapel, Est. 1887, located at Lockhart, Jackson County, West Virginia
At the time of their deaths, George and Laura were both in the Harmer House Nursing Home in Marietta, Ohio. George lived the rest of life at peace.
