George William (Captain Willie) Maddox

The family compilation identifies him and his wife Lucy as the last residents of the old Green Springs house, described as a two-story wooden frame house on a stone foundation that later burned. Its ownership reconstruction says his will was dated 18 March 1944 and devised the farm to Lucy for life and then to five children, but it does not establish what happened to every interest after Lucy's 1949 death. The compiler believes Captain Willie was in this Maddox lineage, but his lineage and parents are not known. A George William Maddox was appointed first Post Master of Maddox, Maryland on 23 August 1892.

From the Family Manuscript

• The house that Samuel and his family lived in was a wooden frame style structure, two stories with a shed type porch on the back. The house was built on a stone foundation. The house is no longer there, just the rock foundation, the house burned several years ago. The last to live in the house was George William (Captain Willie) Maddox, born 21 June 1863, died 25 August 1947 and his wife, Lucy Virginia (Lancaster) Maddox, born 25 November 1868, died 22 February 1949. Both are buried in the cemetery at the Christ Church, Chaptico, St. Marys County, Maryland. We feel that Captain Willie was in our Maddox lineage, but to date his lineage is not known and his parents are not known to us. We do know that Thomas J. C. Maddox was Thomas John Claggett Maddox, born 12 December 1852 in St. Marys County, Maryland, he died 19 December 1885 in New Mexico, he was a surgeon in the U. S. Army, his father was James Thomas Notley Maddox, his father was Samuel Maddox, his father was Samuel Maddox and his parents were John Maddox and Mary (Dyson) Maddox. This Thomas J. C. Maddox was one of the names on the stained glass window in the Christ Church.

• There is a town in Southern Maryland, which bears the name of Maddox, Maryland. This town and its name came from Samuel Maddox and the Maddox family. There was a U. S. Post Office in Maddox, Maryland, it was established in 1892 and the first Post Master was George William Maddox, appointed on 23 August 1892. Officially, it was discontinued by the U. S. Postal Service in 1960.

• The family compilation places Green Springs Farm near Chaptico in St. Mary's County, Maryland, and begins its account with Samuel Maddox. This is a reconstructed ownership tradition assembled from will, estate, and deed abstracts, not a legal chain-of-title opinion.

• The final abstract says George William Maddox's will was dated 18 March 1944 and left Green Springs to his wife, Lucy Virginia Lancaster Maddox, for life, then to five named children. Other archive compilations disagree about the will and probate dates; this story retains the 1944 date only as the selected source's reading. The account ends with George's death in 1947 and Lucy's in 1949. It supplies no later deed and expressly says the subsequent owners were unknown, so neither full title in 1852 nor an end of Maddox ownership in 1949 is claimed. This Maryland George is not the similarly named West Virginia George William Maddox in the direct tree.

• Rodney C. Maddox's larger scrapbook gives a more detailed reading of the deed dated 11 March 1852, JTB 1, page 168. It names three couples as conveying their rights in Green Springs to George Francis Maddox and describes the deed as transferring a three-fourths interest. The compiler labels George Francis's acquisition of Elkanah John Maddox's remaining fourth an assumption, so the published account leaves that interest unresolved. The same file distinguishes George William Maddox's will dated 18 March 1944, probate on 2 September 1947, and estate administration on 8 March 1948. These remain attributed compiler readings of cited records, not a legal chain-of-title opinion.
