Worked for the Warren Local School District at Warren High School as the Secretary to the District Librarian; retired 1 June 1991. Obituary (McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home, Marietta, Ohio): Esther A. “Betty” Maddox, 81, of Barlow, died at 1:35 p.m. on Monday, 31 December 2012, at Marietta Memorial Hospital; named as a daughter of the late Homer O. and Viola Jackson Wise. Graduated from Vincent High School in 1949 and retired in 1991 from Warren Local Schools after 30 years of service as secretary to the Warren High School librarian. A 50-year member of Marietta Chapter 59 Eastern Star, a member of the Bartlett Senior Citizens and of the Bartlett United Methodist Church.
The obituary dates her marriage to James R. Maddox to 12 June 1955 at St. Marks United Methodist Church in Belpre, Rev. Harrison officiating; the family history and his own obituary both date it 18 June 1955 (see source_conflicts). Survived by her husband; children Michael R. Maddox and Patricia A. (David) Graham, both of Bartlett; grandchildren Amy Graham (Thomas) Bean of Marietta and Tabatha Graham of Bartlett; great-grandchildren Cameron J. Bean of Marietta and Miranda Bean of Belpre; nephews Jerald Maddox of Vincent and Denver Wise of New Albany; and niece Pamela Wise Miller of Marietta. Preceded in death by her parents, by her brothers Daymon and Herman Wise, by her sister Ada Irene Wise, by her nephew Rodney Maddox and by her niece Diana Wise Randolph. Burial in Bartlett Cemetery.

James served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict, is South Korea. He entered the army on 30 July 1953 and was discharged on 2 June 1955. He was assigned to the United Nations Command, Armistice Commission. His service number was 52345665. James was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by General Carter for his service in Korea.

James returned to Washington County, Ohio and he married Esther Ann “Betty” Wise on 18 June 1955, in Belpre, Washington County, Ohio. They were married at the St. Marks United Methodist Church by Rev. Harrison.

James worked for the Union Carbide Company, Washington County, Ohio, as Clerk of the Board of Education for the Warren Local School District, Vincent, Washington County, Ohio and as Secretary Treasurer for the Bartlett Farmers Bank, Washington County, Ohio. James retired from the bank on 30 June 1995. His wife, Esther Ann “Betty” (Wise) Maddox worked for the Warren Local School District, at Warren High School as the Secretary to the District Librarian, she retired on 1 June 1991. Both James and Esther reside at their home in Barlow, Washington County, Ohio.
