First-born son of Samuel (Madoc) Maddox and Ann (Anne) Notley, born at the Green Springs Farm, which he inherited after his father's death and where he lived and his children were born. Left a will dated 24 February 1716 (proved 3 April 1716) leaving each of his six named children a seventh part of his personal estate along with enslaved people (Charles and Betty to Samuel; Nedd and Beck to Notley Jr., who also received 100 acres in Charles County bought from Benjamin Fanning; Rich and Mary to John [the will text as recited names John third-born]; Lydia to Ann; Sarah to Sarah; Ann to Jane), and to his wife Margaret, whom he named Executrix, an enslaved man Anthony, an enslaved woman Mary, a servant woman Martha Lilly and a seventh part of the estate. He named Mr. Thomas Notley Goldsmith, Samuel Maddox, John Maddox and Samuel Williamson as trustees for the children. His last-born son John Maddox was not included in the will and inherited nothing, reason unknown.
