Samuel Sheppard; on the official Writ County court record his last name is spelled 'Matox', and the license states he was born in Harrison County, residing in Jackson County, his parents William and Elizabeth 'Matox' (Maddox). The marriage year is given inconsistently in the source. Listed in the 1880 census of the Ravenswood District, Jackson County, West Virginia as a farmer and blacksmith, with daughter Nancy Winebrenner, granddaughter Cora Winebrenner (age 4) and Matilda Cheuvront living in his household. With his wife and his sister Sarah (Maddox) Ott he bought out Mary Louisa (Maddox) Currey's share of their mother's estate under the 1868 Heirs Estate Deed (Deed Book 95, Page 29, Jackson County Courthouse; recorded by David Sommerville, Justice of the Peace).
