Entered the U. S. Army on 27 May 1918; served in combat and was wounded in the left leg and arm on 14 September 1918 at Verdun, France, losing his left leg (he wore a wooden leg for the rest of his life); received a 75 per cent disability pension for life; service number 316989; discharged 12 September 1919. Lived on Drift Run (where son Carl was born), then Lockhart, then Ravenswood, Jackson County, West Virginia; moved in 1943 to Washington County, Ohio, farming on Route 50-A near Barlow; later sold the farm and moved to Belpre, Ohio, then moved back after son Carl Owen Maddox bought the farm. He and Laura were residents of the Harmer House Nursing Home, Marietta, Ohio at the times of their deaths. His death date is given inconsistently in the source.
